Tottenham Hotspur end trophy drought
It is still surreal to write those words. Tottenham Hotspur ended their 17-year trophy drought by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the 2025 UEFA Europa League final. I took the night off work to watch the game, bought myself a 4-pack of “apple juice”, went live on TikTok and enjoyed one of the best nights of my life.
Let me set the scene for you, though. Leading up to the game there was so much talk about who would win the game, and the majority of people were saying Manchester United because of things like “history” and “mentality”, but like I said in my previous article. This group of players are different, and they were the group to put all the haters to sleep and win the Europa League. The game, however, United had most of the possession with a whopping 76%, they created the most chances and were constantly attacking Spurs, but our defence held strong and you know that old saying, “attack wins you games but defence wins you trophies”, that could not be any more true for Tottenham, our backline had to be flawless and their for each other. There were some nervy moments, but each player had their moments, most notably Van de Ven’s goal-line clearance that got Vicario out of trouble, but then right at the end in the 96th minute, Vicario made amends, making a game-winning save from Luke Shaw’s header. At the beginning of the game, I said this game was going to be decided by moments, and it was true. The three moments of this game were Brennan Johnson’s winning goal, Micky Van de Ven’s goal-line clearance and Guglielmo Vicario’s save at the end. The big question, though, is where do we go from here?
Everyone has been speculating whether or not Ange Postecoglou will keep his job because of our league form, to be honest, leading up to the final, I’ve said regardless of the result I’m AngeIn because these last couple of seasons you’ve seen the adjustments he’s made and if he stays I believe he will find the formula that makes a successful football club. Last season, we finished 5th with no trophies to show for it; this season, we finish either 16th or 17th with our first trophy in 17 years, doing a lot better in cup competitions. If he’s given the tools he needs, next season I think we can do even better than this season. Ideally, I believe he needs a top-class holding midfielder, who I believe is Adam Wharton, but we’ll likely be priced-out given how important he is to Crystal Palace and a winger, with all the rumors going around it looks like Tottenham will try for Ryan Cherki whose had a decent season with Lyon, earning a place in the Europa League team of the season. I can’t tell you what the future holds, but I hope Ange stays next season, you can see the family and camaraderie he’s built among the players, and that’s something you just can’t break up.
The last thing I’ll mention is Sonny finally winning a trophy with Tottenham. After 10 years at the club, his quality has been consistent throughout his time here. Yes, it may have come under criticism, but a 20 G/A return this season (all comps) is pretty good. He’s been a very loyal player for the club, it’s a pity he needed a trophy for outsiders to believe it. This trophy means he goes down as one of the most iconic captains the club has seen and a true Tottenham legend, achieving something not a lot of captains get to do, and that’s captaining our club to a trophy.
I hope this is the start of something new, a turning point in the trajectory of Tottenham Hotspur, a butterfly effect moment that’ll go down in history as the turning point of the club, the ascent to the top that this prestigious club deserves. If we get there, I hope Ange is at the front. COYS.
