Season 3 is better than Season 2
That was Ange Postecoglou’s closing line at Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League trophy parade. I can’t help but think that will be his latest statement that people will look into way too much.
Over a week on from one of the greatest nights in Tottenham Hotspur history, all the focus right now is on how Spurs will set themselves up for success going into next season. Unless you’re a rival fan/pundit or even a journo who wants to focus on Tottenham’s poor league form and how it was the worst final possible. I really don’t care about those tangibles because we’re champions of Europe, and no one can take that away from Tottenham Hotspur fans. But let’s get into how we can set ourselves up for a memorable season 3. I’ll be talking about three players who can fill gaps in our squad where they’re needed.
Adam Wharton
Now this kid needs no introduction, but I’ll try my best. The heartbeat of Crystal Palace and the man who makes that side run like a well-oiled machine. He reminds me so much of Sergio Busquets, his press resistance and ability to play out under pressure are so seamless; add in his passing ability to be able to spray long balls all over the pitch, and he has traits Spurs need in a holding-midfielder. The big problem, though, is that there are reports that Crystal Palace has labelled him the next £100m midfielder in the Premier League, and although I think this is the man that can transform Spurs’ midfield, history suggests this will be too much money for Daniel Levy to pay. Meaning we’ll be looking for alternatives, my next target will be Swedish midfielder, Hugo Larsson, from Eintracht Frankfurt, who we can probably get for half the price. He’s a different kind of midfielder, but ultimately is an engine who can be all over the pitch if play ever breaks up. Either way, a new holding midfielder is essential.
Bryan Mbuemo
Brentford’s go-to man will be tough to pry away, but in an interview with Brentford Captain Christian Nørgaard, he stated, Bryan is likely to go next season. Which is a heavy loss for Brentford, as he contributed to over a 3rd of their goals in the Premier League. Not the quickest winger, but his flair and technical ability, mixed with his finishing, make him one of the deadliest wingers in the league. These are traits needed in any winger we bring to N17. Although I’m curious to know if he’s the sort of player that could fit into the system, given he plays on the right, and we all know who plays there. Then again, top teams always need multiple first-team players in every position, especially when we’ll be competing in the Champions League next season. If we are to show our chops as European champions and a top club, we’ll need to be bringing in top-class calibre players like Mbuemo.
Marc Guehi
It came as a surprise to I think, all Spurs fans when reports came out that Tottenham sent a monster bid of £70m for the Crystal Palace defender so late in the January transfer window, but was rejected as Palace saw this business being initiated so late in the window. This could suggest Spurs could return for the defender, however, it is made difficult when we already have two top defenders, but like I said in my previous point above, top teams always need multiple players in all positions so regardless if Cristian Romero stays, our latest player to be linked with a move away, we should go all in for Guehi because like we’ve seen when Romero and Van de Ven don’t play we’re left vulnerable at the back and it would be so good if we had top class players to come in for cup competitions or even the Champions League and put in a shift. We already have players like Kevin Danso and Radu Dragušin, but we know Radu is shaky in possession, plus we have Luka Vušković coming into the team next season and Ben Davies is likely to leave, with the latest reports coming out that newly promoted Championship side Wrexham AFC are going in for him. So if we’re able to sign Guehi in the new season, I think we’d have a pretty solid defensive backline.
I know a lot of people are losing their minds about the links with Eberechi Eze, and to be honest, I would love him at Spurs, but the three players listed above are the positions where I think the most attention is needed. I imagine we’ll need to act quickly, especially since our first major game of the season will be the UEFA Super Cup, where Tottenham Hotspur will play one of PSG or Inter Milan. Two of the elite teams this season. I will definitely be trying to attend that game in Udine, Italy. Who knows, Spurs could win another trophy before the Premier League season starts, but I may be getting ahead of myself. Who knows, let season three begin. COYS.
