Ange Postecoglou sacked by Tottenham Hotspur
Unfortunately, in true Spurs fashion, another one bites the dust.
Two years after being appointed head coach, Ange Postecoglou has been sacked by Tottenham Hotspur. It may come as a surprise, given he won the Europa League a couple of weeks ago, the first trophy in 17 years and the first European trophy in over 40 years, Ange achieved something the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, and Antonio Conte failed to do and that was win a trophy. I’ll give my personal opinion on the decision and the big picture opinion, so here we go.
In my personal opinion, I think he deserved one more season. He’d taken us to a Carabao Cup semi-final and a Europa League trophy, which is further than any other coach ever took us. He built camaraderie amongst the dressing room that was nurtured over 2 seasons and some pretty tough times, and to take a team that had gone through so much adversity to a trophy is an unprecedented achievement that cannot be replicated. Putting an end to over 17 years of bantering and hard times for all Spurs fans, giving them something to celebrate and praise the team that they love so much, all to take it away from them is crazy. Ange gave us belief and faith that things could turn around, and for that, I will always be grateful. Ange’s Tottenham gave me one of the greatest nights of my life; that is something I will not be able to relive again, but a night I will always remember.
On the other hand, I can also understand why the higher-ups have relieved Ange of his duties. We finished 17th in the Premier League. The only reason we didn’t get relegated is that the three teams below us were so bad. We finished in the worst placing among the Premier League sides that remained, which is a huge problem. We also had a second injury crisis, which is down to the way Ange Postecoglou wanted Spurs to play, and that is something that needed to change. We have an extremely good side, but if they’re not all fit, that becomes a problem, as shown in recent results. So this big decision is also not surprising.
What I hope moving forward is that the board appoint a coach who can use our newfound success as a springboard to catapult this club to continued success and to push us on to where this club deserves to be, and that is at the top. The man at the top of that list is Brentford FC manager Thomas Frank. Not who I had imagined taking over, but if he does, I wish him the best because Ange will be a tough act to follow from a man-manager POV and a on-field manager POV. Either way I will be there supporting this great club. COYS.
